Birmingham Carers Partnership Strategy 2024-2029 Launched at Carers Rights Day Event

On 20th November 2024, the Birmingham Carers Hub Carers Rights Day event marked a significant milestone for Carers in the region. Saba Rai, Service Lead for Adult Social Care Commissioning, alongside Councillor Rob Pocock, unveiled the Birmingham Carers Partnership Strategy 2024-2029. This launch represents a dedicated effort to enhance support for the city’s 91,469 Unpaid Carers, who make up 8% of Birmingham’s population, as highlighted in the 2021 Census.

Why a Carers Partnership Strategy is Essential

Carers play a vital role in our communities, often providing round-the-clock care to loved ones. Yet, many face challenges like emotional strain, financial pressures, and a lack of access to suitable support. This Strategy acknowledges these realities and sets out to bridge the gap, ensuring that Birmingham’s Carers receive the recognition and resources they deserve.

What Does the Strategy Aim to Achieve?

The Birmingham Carers Partnership Strategy 2024-2029 is a result of collaboration between Carers, Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Children’s Trust, Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board, and community and voluntary sector organisations.

Through consultation and co-production, Carers have actively shaped the Strategy’s contents and design, ensuring that it truly reflects their needs. Key aspects of the Strategy include:

  • A Whole Life Course Approach: Addressing the challenges Carers face during transitions between different life stages, ensuring tailored support across their caregiving journey.
  • Alignment with the Care Act 2014: Meeting legal requirements to support Carers’ wellbeing, as mandated by the Care Act, and incorporating priorities from Think Local Act Personal guidance.
  • Promoting Positive Health and Wellbeing: Empowering Carers to focus on self-care and self-management while providing avenues to maintain their own health.

A Partnership Built for Impact

By working with key stakeholders, the Strategy aims to ensure Carers receive the right type and level of support at the right time. This partnership-driven approach reflects a commitment to making Birmingham a truly Carer Friendly Community.

What’s Next?

The launch of the Birmingham Carers Partnership Strategy is just the beginning. Over the next five years, its impact will be closely monitored to ensure it delivers real benefits to Birmingham’s Carers.
