Exploring the Experiences of Caribbean Dementia Carers: A Call for Participation
Feyisola Raimi-Abraham, is an unpaid dementia Carer with Caribbean heritage, she is also the founder of The Black Dementia Company and a PhD student at London Metropolitan University. Feyi is exploring the unique needs and experiences of unpaid dementia Carers of Caribbean heritage living in the UK and is looking for Carers to take part in her research.
Why This Research Matters
Dementia affects millions of families worldwide, yet there remains a notable gap in research focused on the perspectives of unpaid Carers, especially those from Caribbean backgrounds. While much is documented about the experiences of individuals living with dementia, the voices of those who care for them often go unheard.
Feyi is conducting interviews with unpaid Carers in London and Birmingham, primarily via Zoom, to gather insights into their experiences. The aim is to amplify these voices and ensure that the specific needs of Caribbean families are recognized and met within dementia services across the UK.
The Importance of Your Voice
Feyi is looking to interview up to 20 unpaid dementia Carers of Caribbean heritage, you may be looking after a relative or a friend or neighbout. If you or someone you know fits this description and would be willing to share your experiences, your insights can help shape more culturally relevant and effective dementia care services.
What Participation Involves
Participating in this research is straightforward:
- Preparation: You’ll need about 10 minutes a few days before the interview to read the participant information sheet and consent form, sign it and return it to Feyi.
- Interview: The interview itself will last around one hour and will take place via Zoom, which Feyi will facilitate.
Feyi is committed to making this process as comfortable as possible and is more than happy to accommodate your schedule.
Voluntary Participation
Taking part in this research is entirely voluntary and if you decide to participate, you can withdraw at any time without any obligation or reason. Your contribution will be invaluable in ensuring that the experiences and needs of Caribbean dementia carers are acknowledged and addressed.
Beyond Interviews: Building Community
Feyi would also like to host an informal gathering in Birmingham, where Carers can come together to share their experiences in a relaxed setting.
Confidentiality Assured
Your privacy is paramount. All interviews will be treated confidentially, Feyi will not use your real name, location or personal details in any published work.
Feyi said, “By highlighting the specific challenges faced by Caribbean Carers, I hope to advocate for improvements in the services available to them and their loved ones. Thank you for considering this opportunity to share your voice and make a difference.”
