World Alzheimer’s Day 2026

World Alzheimer’s Day 2026 takes place every year on 21st September, and marks a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer’s and other dementia.

Across communities, unpaid Carers provide extraordinary amounts of support to people living with dementia.

This can include helping someone with medication and appointments, managing finances, preparing meals, providing personal care, or keeping someone safe.

It can also mean providing reassurance when someone is confused or frightened, responding to changes in behaviour, or simply being there when needed.

The impact can be significant.

Recent Alzheimer’s Society research found that 43% of people caring for someone with dementia said they had reached “breaking point” and felt unable to cope, while 56% said caring had damaged their mental health.

It’s why this World Alzheimer’s Day, we are encouraging Carers to focus on their own wellbeing.

Dementia Carer Support in Action

Across the Forward Carers site, we are constantly documenting the stories of unpaid Carers, including those caring for someone living with Dementia.

Sharing real experiences helps people recognise that they are not alone, discover support they may not have known was available, and learn from others who understand the realities of caring.

Take Anna’s story.

Anna became a Carer for her mother following a diagnosis of vascular dementia.

Having previously cared for her father, stepping into this role again had a significant impact on Anna’s own mental health and wellbeing. At first, she felt as though she was on “autopilot”, but over time she has learned to appreciate the small things and find moments of joy in her caring role.

There are still many challenges, but Anna’s account of her experience is incredibly powerful. It reminds Carers that they are not alone.
