Reaching Hidden Carers Through Local Pharmacies

At Forward Carers, we know that many people who look after a loved one don’t always see themselves as Carers. Without recognising their role, they may miss out on the information, support and services available to help them. With our Health Liaison service, we’re continuing to work closely with pharmacies, Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and community partners to change that.

Local pharmacies are one of the places Carers visit most often, whether picking up prescriptions for the person they care for or managing their own health. That makes pharmacies a vital setting to start conversations and share information with people who may not otherwise know about carer support.

As Priya, a pharmacist in Hall Green, explains:
“We get a lot of Carers coming in, including those who are patients themselves. It’s very common in this area and I can think of a few people who would welcome to have this information available.”

Making Carer information easy to access

With simple posters and leaflets placed in pharmacy waiting areas and consultation rooms, we’re helping to reach carers in a place they already trust. Each resource asks a simple question:
“Caring for a family member or friend?”

From there, Carers can scan a QR code, visit our website or call to find out about local support, health checks, benefits advice, wellbeing groups and more. The aim is to make the first step as easy as possible.

Building partnerships across health and the community

This approach is part of a wider partnership with PCNs, GP surgeries, community organisations and partners. By working together, we’re identifying hidden carers earlier and making sure no one falls through the gaps.

The Carers Week 2025 theme of “Caring About Equality” reminds us how important it is to create equal access to support for all carers, whatever their background, circumstances or caring situation.

Ongoing work, not just for Carers Week

Although Carers Week helps to shine a spotlight, this work continues all year round. We’ll keep building on pharmacy partnerships, working alongside local health teams, and listening to feedback from carers themselves to shape the best ways to reach and support people who are caring for someone.

If you work in a pharmacy, GP practice, or community setting and would like to get involved, please contact us to find out more.
