Art, Connection and Respite: Carers Find Joy Through Creative Expression
Forward Carers launched a small grants initiative last year that enabled Carers to come together for shared wellbeing and respite. Here is an example of how one group of Carers used their grant.
Thanks to the grant from Forward Carers, a group of 10 Carers were able to take part in a series of uplifting art sessions. Led by an art tutor, these sessions offered more than just brushes and paint – they provided much-needed respite, connection, and a chance for Carers to nurture their own creativity.
“While we create wonderful art we talk and support each other. Carers have said it has given them a chance to totally switch off from daily stresses of caring. Others have said they are trying and learning things they wouldn’t normally do”
Creativity as Self-Care
Caring for a loved one can often leave little time for personal wellbeing. The art group became a regular opportunity for Carers to pause, recharge, and focus on themselves.
One Carer reflected:
“Taking part in the art group broadened my horizons about different techniques, thanks to us being able to have the support of a lovely art tutor. I also cherished the time spent with other Carers, many of which I’ve known for years. This regular activity was the perfect excuse to make that time in my busy week for self-care. Education and empathy in one package!”
For many, the sessions were not only creative but deeply therapeutic. Another Carer shared:
“I really enjoyed the art sessions and it gave me something to look forward to. Not only was it nice to get together with other Carers… sharing experiences and feeling supported, but doing some art at the same time was a real bonus. It felt like real therapy, and I always left feeling positive and uplifted.”
Respite and Relaxation
Carers spoke about the sessions offering a rare sense of respite from the pressures of their caring role:
“When I did attend it was respite from daily issues and caring duties, I was able to just relax and enjoy and learn new skills with amazing people. I hope very soon I will be able to attend again.”
Others found the experience opened new doors, giving them the confidence to explore art for the first time:
“I have never been into art but this changed my outlook… the supportive people in the group made it even better.”

The sense of connection and community was just as important as the art itself. As one Carer explained:
“Coming to the art group has been a great opportunity to try many different styles of art. It has been relaxing, and therapeutic, I have really enjoyed it. A big thank you for organising it, the teacher for her encouragement and patience, and thank you for everyone who came and made it a lovely experience.”
Celebrating Carers’ Creativity
The sessions not only created beautiful artwork, but also left lasting memories relaxation, and friendship. For many, it was a chance to rediscover creativity and embrace moments of peace amidst their caring responsibilities.
Forward Carers is proud to support projects like these, which remind us of the power of creativity to bring respite and joy to Carers’ lives.
